Canada / Mexico / United States
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by all 3 countries from North America: Canada, Mexico and the United States. Mexico will be the first nation to host it for the third time, after hosting the 1970 and 1986 tournaments. Their joint bid was chosen over Morocco’s bid.
A big change is being made to the format: There will be 48 nations competing at the tournament. The teams will be split in 12 groups of 4 teams each, with the top two and the 8 best third places advancing to a round of 32. So now, instead of 4 stages after the group stage, there will be 5 stages: round of 32, round of 16, quarter finals, semi finals and the final.
The total number of games will increase from 64 to 104. And the teams that reach the semi finals will play 8 games, instead of 7. Because of that, its expected for the tournament to last around 10 days longer that previous tournaments.
The 48 places would be allocated as follow: 3 for the hosts, 16 to UEFA (including Israel), 6 to CONMEBOL, 8 to AFC, 3 to CONCACAF, 9 to CAF and, for the first time ever, 1 guaranteed place to OFC. The last 2 places will be contested in a Inter-confederation play-off that will be played in one or more of the host countries. They will be played by the 9th from the AFC qualification, the 10th from CAF, the 4th and 5th from CONCACAF, the 7th from CONMEBOL and the 2nd from OFC.
